Most people think of Miley Cyrus as a sweet, innocent “girl-next-door.” But heartbreak sometimes changes people. Miley says that after Nick Jonas broke up with her, she wanted to be more hardcore. She didn’t want to be a cute, sweet little girl anymore. She felt sad and angry inside, and she wanted to look that way on the outside, too.
But she must have gotten over Nick pretty quickly, because she still doesn’t look very tough. People who look hardcore usually have a lot of tattoos and piercings, or dress like punk rockers. If you have a hardcore attitude, you’re dark, serious and intense.
In the late 1970s, a new style of punk rock appeared that was harder, faster and more aggressive. This became known as hardcore punk. Other styles of music are also described as hardcore. For example, hip-hop songs with violent or obscene lyrics are sometimes known as hardcore rap.
In fact, hardcore can mean a more extreme version of almost anything. If you’re a hardcore athlete, for example, you take sports really seriously and spend almost all your time doing them. If you need a job hardcore, it means you really, really need a job. Now.
