Hung - exception to the rule

Lesson

'hung' is the past of 'to hang', with 1 main exception.

A form of punishment many years ago in England, was trying a knotted looped rope around the neck (a noose) & releasing a trapdoor under the person. Therefor killing the person by using their own weight, to break their neck & the spinal cord.

Spinal cord - the cylindrical bundle of nerve fibres & associated tissue that is enclosed in the spine (backbone) & connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain. It forms the central nervous system.

If the spinal cord was not severed, the more unfortunate victims would suffer great pain as the partially broken bones would tear into them with their struggles & eventually die of suffocation. Not being able to breathe.

It would be incorrect to say - "that person was hung".

The correct way - "that person was hanged".

The way I was taught - "a dog is hung, a man is hanged"

In my opinion, not a nice way to educate a child, talking about cruelty to animals  :-(

To all the hi's – hi back at you  :)

To all the 'thanks' – you are welcome

To all the 'we learnt something' – glad to be of help.

Comment on cruel – yes, indeed – I totally agree.

As it was a form of capital punishment for murder, it was hoped that if people were afraid of this terrible death, they wouldn't think to kill.

To those who find don't understand a few words, ask me. Don't worry – it will come to you  :)

You can hang out the clothes to dry, on hangers – the metal triangles for hanging clothes in wardrobes etc, but in the past tense – they were hung out to dry or as 'ainee82' said, hung dried.

'islavenado' – from what I understand of the message "original caller hang up" – is a request that the original caller (maybe the 1st caller) – could they please hang up their phone/put down their receiver/simply end their call by hanging up/or press disconnect on their mobile. If my interpretation is correct, it would sound less blunt & nicer to hear "Would the original caller please hang up". An alternative – "Would the original caller please hang up …& try again later/ ...& call back later"

Finally, please forgive an error mine:

Second sentence – 'Therefor' is incorrect.

The correct spelling is 'Therefore'.

Have a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year.

& make sure not to be 'hung over' – to suffer with a hangover, from drinking too much alcohol, the night before  :-))
