Hung - exception to the rule

Lesson

'hung' is the past of 'to hang', with 1 main exception.

A form of punishment many years ago in England, was trying a knotted looped rope around the neck (a noose) & releasing a trapdoor under the person. Therefor killing the person by using their own weight, to break their neck & the spinal cord.

Spinal cord - the cylindrical bundle of nerve fibres & associated tissue that is enclosed in the spine (backbone) & connects nearly all parts of the body to the brain. It forms the central nervous system.

If the spinal cord was not severed, the more unfortunate victims would suffer great pain as the partially broken bones would tear into them with their struggles & eventually die of suffocation. Not being able to breathe.

It would be incorrect to say - "that person was hung".

The correct way - "that person was hanged".

The way I was taught - "a dog is hung, a man is hanged"

In my opinion, not a nice way to educate a child, talking about cruelty to animals  :-(

SEXUAL  MEANING:

Another version of "hung" – can be sexually understood.

The man (only men) was "well hung" – this slang meaning suggests largeness of the penis.

So don't say, after a hanging (as if you would) – "that man was well hung".

The very short version:

"To hang" – to suspended from – we hang out the clothes to dry (on a clothes line).

In the past tense – 2 different words can be used (depending on meaning)

"Hung" & "Hanged"

The clothes were hung out to dry.

The photos were hung in the darkroom.

The paintings were hung in the gallery.

I hung onto the tree, until my fingers went numb.

The exception to this rule – is with a form of human execution – rope around the neck & dropped.

To hang a person in the past, becomes:

"The person was hanged"  – NOT "hung"

How am I doing Ece?  :-))

There is an eception as regards to hung in my country.

When one is hanging it mesns you have no penny.

So if you are hung it means someone disappointed you.
