Okay, I have read the comments from all of you at The Round Table. There are many topics of discussion, therefore, I am preparing to write my response to your comments.

I want to commend Drmahsa for taking the opportunity to provide answers to Samand. I would like to see the discussion at the table to involve others sharing what they have learned to questions that are asked.

I can take the role as a moderator and provide guidance and input from my perspective.

Great job for all who responded, keep it going and we will all benefit from the discussions.

I am delighted to see Fizaa and Yuminaga who gave their advice before The Round Table began, kudos to you!

yes, just note, you can say: i couldn’t go to the party last night but you can’t say it by use of “could” you should use “was able to”.

by the way now i just copied this in english baby that can help more:

To be able to do something means to have the ability to do it. Be able to is sometimes used in place of can or could. Instead of, “I can’t go,” you might say, “I am not able to go.”

You can use be able to in any tense. Just change the tense of the verb be. For example, you can say, “I was able to see a movie last night,” or, “He will be able to visit me tomorrow.”

Drmahsa1995, thanks but i want to know more than simple things, the modal “could” expressse past generall ability (physicaly or mentaly) for example: i could swim when i was four” but for particular things in past, you should use “be able to” instead of “could”: last night, i was able to go to the party. for nagative forms both are correct for general or particular, hope you can learn a new thing!!

hi samand LOOK: I could learn to swim if some one would take the time to show me how./”could” is a form of the verb “CAN”/and “WOULD”is a form of the verb “WILL”in its sense of a future inevitability. if u mean a physical ability or possiblity u  have to use “COULD”/BUT  if the meaning is more of a  logical consequence  then “WOULD ” is better/// SO: ( COULD is past tense of can

Used to indicate ability or permission in the past: I could run faster then./ “WOULD ” is past tense of WILL  and it used to express desire or intent example : She said she would meet us at the corner.

Dear teacher,

I wanna thank you for your invitation and tell you that I have problems in putting tenses in their appropriate places.

This issue brings me trouble, for english has more than one tense for past actions. Could you enlighten me please on this subject?

                   Thanks in advance

Wendy, here is my suggestion. When you read a phrasal verb, write it down and analyze the context.

There is a book by Peter Dainty called Phrasal Verbs and Idioms, you may want to purchase it because it gives context and an explanation.
