Imagine this: You open your laptop and start working. When you stop to drink some coffee, you look around. Maybe, you see the Eiffel Tower. Maybe, you see a beautiful beach. Maybe, you see the Great Pyramids. Does this sound like a wonderful life? If so, then you should be a digital nomad! A digital nomad is a person who works remotely. This means they can afford to travel because they’re making money at the same time.

It’s not always easy to be a digital nomad. You must find an online job. You must find accommodations even if you don’t speak the local language. You need a reliable internet connection. You need to be OK with culture shock. On the other hand, if there’s nothing tying you down at home, it’s a lot of fun to travel! You’ll make a new support network in your new home and learn many interesting things about the world.

Brian wants to travel the world but he’s afraid the cost of living is too high. Jordin has an idea for Brian. Listen to this English lesson to find out what Jordin thinks Brian should do.

Brian:  So, my friend just went to Singapore for three months, and…

Jordin:  Awesome!

Brian:  I know! And I want to be able to do that, but I just don’t know how. I can’t afford it. The cost of living is so high for traveling, and I’d have to not work for three months.

Jordin:  Yeah, well, have you ever thought about working remotely?

Brian:  From other countries? I’ve worked from home, here and there, but…

Jordin:  There are jobs you can get where you don’t have to check in anywhere at all, and you can just travel around.

Brian:  That seems scary to me. I mean, it seems really fun, but I worry about a reliable internet connection.

Jordin:  Let me tell you. I heard about this thing, this website. It’s called Remote Year. Once you pay them, they will help coordinate for you all of your accommodations. They’ll give a place to live, they’ll give you references for people to connect with in their community.

Brian:  Oh, wow!

Jordin:  So that, whatever job you’re doing,...

Brian:  ... you have a working space…

Jordin:  Yes!

Brian:  ... no matter where you are.

Jordin:  Exactly. And you still get that freedom with nothing tying you down, but you also have a support network.

Brian:  That’s so interesting, and I almost feel like working from a new place would actually take down some of the culture shock. It would be a little less impactful because I’d still be doing something really familiar…

Jordin:  Totally.

Brian:  ... in a new place.

Jordin:  Yes.

Brian:  I’ll definitely have to check that out. Thank you.

Jordin:  You totally should. You’re welcome.

Brian and Jordin are talking about traveling. Brian’s friend just traveled to Singapore, and Brian wishes he could also travel somewhere. The problem is, of course, money. But Jordin has a fun idea. She thinks Brian should be a digital nomad so that he can afford to travel. Brian already worked remotely a little bit, here and there, but he isn’t sure about the cost of living in other countries. Again, Jordin has another idea to share with him.

She tells him about a program for digital nomads. The program is called Remote Year and it helps people find accommodations and meet a support network while they travel. This is really good news to Brian. With help from the website, he could live and work in another country. And if he’s working, the feeling of culture shock wouldn’t be so impactful. Now, all Brian needs is an online job and a reliable internet connection. He’s ready to be a digital nomad!

Do you know a digital nomad? Would you like to work and travel the world at the same time?

Work and travel at the same time without anything tying you down to one place sounds great. I think it will be intresting to live that way for some time.
