It’s easy to stop paying attention to how good our lives are sometimes. We become so comfortable having a home, food, and our health that we forget that not everyone has even these basic things. Often it is a serious event or situation in our lives, like losing a job or someone we love, that helps us to understand what we truly have. These kinds of events can give us a new lease on life.

When you have a new lease on life, the world looks different. You can see possibilities you couldn’t see before. You might want to tell people how you feel about them and how important they are to you. People with a new lease on life might decide to make big changes in how they spend their time and who they see. It’s all about making better choices and living one’s best life.

Marni got bad news, but Jessica and Brian think that it can actually give her a new lease on life. Decide for yourself by reading this week’s English lesson.

Jessica:  Hey, Marni. How’s it going?

Marni:  I’m OK. I just got off the phone with Amanda.

Brian:  Amanda. Isn’t she your boss?

Marni:  She owns the company I work for. Or at least the one I used to work for.

Jessica:  What do you mean?

Marni:  She’s selling the company.

Brian:  No kidding. What does that mean for you?

Marni:  It means I’m out of a job. I don’t know what to do now.

Jessica:  Marni, I know it’s scary, but this change could give you a new lease on life.

Brian:  You have been saying you want to go back to school.

Marni:  It’s true, but it’s been so long since I’ve been a student. I bet everything’s really different.

Jessica:  I don’t think it’s changed much. Brian, you’re taking a class, right?

Brian:  Yes, I am. Marni, what do you want to study?

Marni:  I don’t know. I know I want to pursue a master’s degree.

Brian:  Well, knowing that is kind of important. That way you can find out if you need to take any prereqs.

Jessica:  Prereqs?

Brian:  Prerequisites. They’re the classes you need to take before you can earn a degree.

Marni:  OK. What about the application?

Jessica:  I’m sure there will be an essay, and you’ll need letters of recommendation, too.

Brian:  Don’t forget your transcripts.

Marni:  Oh, this is feeling too difficult.

Jessica:  Marni, going back to school is going to change your life for the better.

Brian:  And give you a new lease on life.

Marni:  If you say so…

Marni has heard some surprising news. Her boss is selling the company she works for, so Marni’s job is ending. Jessica and Brian believe that this is a good opportunity for Marni to go back to school. She has been talking about wanting to earn another degree.

Marni’s friends talk about everything she’ll need to do to return to school. She will need letters of recommendation from old teachers or bosses. She’ll need to send in her grades, and will probably have to write an essay. It will be a lot of work, but then Marni can be a student again.

Have you ever had a new lease on life?

After finishing high school I was completely lost. I didn’t know which way to turn. I was just eating and sleeping all the time and everyone was convinced that I would amount to nothing.

At that time, I fell in love and suddenly things changed. New possibilities opened up and gave me a new lease on life.

I’m really terrible at recalling situations, especially if they are so many like in this case.

Yeah! I always see a new lease on life after every hard moment passes me. I tense a little, get alone thinking of it. Then I see the light again and go along the new path that has been opened for me.

You can have a new lease on life when you see a grace within an ordeal, and when you see the full half of the glass.

Every cloud has a silver lining!

Imagine someone give blood test, blood test result shows he\she has a bad disease, normally who encounters such result, It makes he\she crazy and so sad, of course, the first these type of test results are not reliable, so you think this situation how much could be painful until the second test result shows he\she is healthy!

We have no idea how happy will he\she after second test result! after that, life will have new mean, and some things will be meaningless or somethings will be meaningful.

These kind of events can have good side and bad side, the bad side in these type of situations is anxiety, stress, pain and thinking it is end of our life, feeling lose whatever is so important to us, The good side could be opening a new window to our mind and understanding the value of what we have or not, and of course it can give us a new lease on life as for Marni in this lesson or for MESS.

I have a friend who is living in Brazil. He is dedicating his life to do social services to the poor and is highly respected by  the community.  It happens that when a couple breaks  up the news   to him that they are going to divorce,he tells them, ” wait,  do nothing now” ,first come with me  for two weeks  to the Oncologic   Hospital to do social service . After that time, and having seen so much suffering , and the petty things that were breaking apart their marriage ,  decide to take  a new lease in life  staying together.

Years ago when I was 17, my cousin passed away unexpectedly at the age of 20. It had been a while since I last saw him and we were trying hard to meet but he was studying in another city. He came back to my town a couple of times but I was in the school or pretty busy with my studies. We failed to meet all the time in the last few months. Then one day my phone rang and it was my aunt calling. She said that he was gone. I did not believe it. I thought she meant that he went to somewhere. But then I realized that it was true. I cannot tell what kind of pain I felt. It was this regret that was killing me. I kept telling myself, “If I tried harder or cancelled something, I could meet him and hug him.” I was a little bit cold towards people at that time, in my teenager years. Hugging people was not really my thing. I would not even say “I love you.” to people that were really important to me including my mother and father.

His death gave me a lease on life. That day I decided to look people in the eyes and be honest with my feelings. Now I am pretty generous with expressing my feelings. I tell my family how much I love them. I visit them as often as possible. I buy them gifts and love making them happy. I hug my friends. I look people right in the eyes when I talk to them. I smile at people on the street even though I do not know them. I say good morning or good evening or hello to people in my neighborhood. I help old people with their bags or crossing the street. It is the real happiness. I would not probably realize it if I did not experience that sad feeling after my cousin’s death.

I want a new lease on life too. I always dreamed to be an astronomer. It’s not easy to quit my job and follow my dream as I need money to survive but I’ll figure out a way. :)
