Go Super to Listen Go Super!

When many of us listen to music, it’s on our phones or computers. We use headphones to hear digital files on our laptops. We buy music on the internet from online stores. And the whole time we never touch an actual album.

It wasn’t that long ago when music fans had to go to a store to pick up CDs. We can still buy CDs now, but it’s not as popular as it used to be. CDs (or compact discs) are small, shiny, and round, and they can only be heard on a CD player with speakers. CDs have booklets that listeners can use to read the words in each song. It’s something fans can hold and look at while listening to their favorite musicians and bands.

Jessica doesn’t want her old CDs anymore, but Lily wants to keep them. Find out more in today’s English lesson about listening to music.

Jessica:  I’m trying to reorganize my office at home. I found stacks and stacks of CDs, and I don’t know what to do with them. I feel like they’re obsolete. I should just give them away to charity or something.

Lily:  No! Give them to me, give them to me! I’m collecting them. They’re so old-school. It’s great!

Jessica:  But what’s the point? Now we have digital music and MP3s. I guess they’re more tangible to have the CD. But I have an MP3 player in my car now.

Lily:  But think of it… CDs are like the new vinyl record. It’s this cool thing that you have. You can see it in your hand. You can put it in the player. You can listen to the music. It’s not just bits on a computer. It’s more authentic. As opposed to if your computer crashes, then all of your music is gone.

Jessica:  It is true. And something I will say I found was all of the booklets that come with the CDs have the lyrics in them, which is also really cool. Maybe I’ll hang onto those.

Lily:  Do it. Or give them to me.

Discussion

Go Super to Listen Go Super!

Jessica found some old CDs and she isn’t sure what to do with them. She’s thinking of giving them away because she doesn’t listen to them anymore. Even if she wanted to listen to the CDs, she doesn’t own a CD player.

But not everyone thinks that CDs are obsolete. Lily thinks that Jessica should give the CDs to her because she collects them. Lily likes that she can hold CDs in her hand, and that they remind her of the past. Lily also points out that if Jessica’s computer crashes, she will lose all of her digital music.

Do you listen to CDs? What do you like or dislike about CDs?

I prefer vinyl record to CDs.
It is surely obsolete .but I feel that sound are the best to me .
Vinyl records has a problem .it needs a huge space to put on.
So Unfortunatelly I gave all to my friends .

Cds could be a hassle to carry. Also we have to have a CD player. MP3 music is a lot more handy.

I don’t have a CD player here, and of course, in turn, no CDs either. But we have a tape recorder and we still have songs tapes of the old singers that my dad doesn’t enjoy listening to them unless it’s on the tape recorder, although the fact that I have them all as digital MP3s on my laptop.

It’s good to save the old things you have, and sometimes I agree that some things in the past were more enjoyable than being interfered and processed with technology now. But one should admit that we can’t imagine our life now without technology too. But we have to appreciate the old things and keep them because they’re good memories.

I still have a lot of CDs. I need to put somewhere my cup of hot coffee).

As for CDs that were not so obsolete, I’ve given them away.

My favorite songs are on my cell phone.

And I liked lyrics in booklets. Sometimes it’s impossible to find words of a song in the Internet.

By the way, does somebody listen to Arrayan Path and know their lyrics?

You’ll be laughing S&W, I still have my tape recorder and listen to the French course on it. It’s also convenient if you want to record something from the radio and listen to it the second time. Obsolete, yes, but not all obsolete is useless. And since everything goes in cycle- the next will be records:)

Cds – well that’s true has become obsolete because of its size. You can’t dance with the CDplayer. One turn and the CD will hit the walls. You cannot fit the flying saucer in your pocket as well, unless you have a very big cangaroo pocket. But still I have a lovely CD collection and not going to give up on it. I’ll put them in my car and listen, or just buy a rocking chair, put a stand of Cds besides and will be listening too. But it’s unrealistic. Plus, our sophisticated technology is coming with tinier and tinier devices. I have one that you can clip and it sits on you like a bug motionlessly. What’s the next breakthrough ? It reminds me the movie- Honey I shrunk the kids. And it’s really true, the new apple player is so small that yesterday i couldn’t see it on the floor and almost crash it. I almost had a heart attack when realized what was under my foot. I picked it up. Listened. It worked! Wow! It’s durable too. But, please – don’t experiment!
