New experiences change us in small or big ways. Still, there is always some part of us that remains true to form. In some ways, we stay the same no matter what.
Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch was a rapper for the Beastie Boys, an energetic, passionate, and fun hip-hip group. He recently died of cancer. But his former bandmate, Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz, says cancer didn’t change who he was. He stayed true to form, despite the difficulties he faced.
True to form can be positive or negative. If you act true to form by making the same mistake or displaying the same bad behavior as you always do, that’s negative. For example, when a known cheater lies, betraying his girlfriend, you might say, “I’m not surprised. He was acting true to form.” Or if someone is never on time, you might say, “True to form, she was 15 minutes late to class.”
But Ad-Rock uses the expression true to form in a positive way when talking about his friend. He is proud that MCA didn’t change, even when he was very sick. He continued to be himself, laugh, and have fun. He remained true to form in a good way.
Have you ever faced something challenging? Did you stay true to form?
