St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday. But in the US, we’ll take any excuse to party. Although there are many people whose families came here from Ireland, you don’t have to be an Irish immigrant to celebrate St. Paddy’s Day, American-style. Just make sure you remember to wear green. Otherwise, you might get a pinch. Hear Devan and Jeff talk about their St. Patrick’s Day plans.

Devan:  So what are you doing for St. Patrick’s Day this year, are you gonna go out and drink green beer?

Jeff:  Nothing.

Devan:  Nothing? Really? You’re not gonna wear all green and get a party hat and wear a shamrock and get wasted at an Irish pub?

Jeff:  No. No pubs, no pints, no parades. It’s just a kinda cheesy American thing to make a buck.

Devan:  You think it’s just commercialized here?

Jeff:  Yeah. Just like a bunch of…well, every other major holiday here.

Devan:  You’re such a party pooper, Jeff. If I see you on St. Patrick’s Day, and you’re not wearing green, I’m gonna pinch you.

Jeff:  I’m a party animal, not a party pooper. Just not on St. Paddy’s Day.

Devan:  You’re still getting pinched.

Devan asks Jeff about his St. Patrick’s Day plans. He says he isn’t going to do anything on St. Patrick’s Day. He thinks it is an overly commercialized holiday, and he doesn’t like to celebrate it.

Devan, on the other hand, enjoys St. Patrick’s Day. She likes to go to a pub and drink green beer. In some US cities, there are big parades on St. Patrick’s Day.
It’s also common for people to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, if you don’t wear green, you might get a pinch. Devan calls Jeff a party pooper and says that she is going to pinch him if she sees him on St. Paddy’s Day without any green.

Is St. Patrick’s Day celebrated in your country? If you see someone who isn’t wearing green on St. Paddy’s Day, will you pinch them?

Julito, one important thing in celebrating is to have a green jacket. If you have it, you belong! Tongue out

Ryo, nice wish… to go to Ireland, get in a pub and see how the real St. Paddy’s Day is celebrated. It’s all quiet in here so far. I think everyone is experiencing a hangover…Laughing

I have a question:

I’d love to hold a free online group class once a week. Does anyone know how I could do that – what kind of software or website that would allow us to have a group class for free? I use Skype for my one-to-one classes, but I think you have to pay for a group class.

I thought it’d be a treat to get together weekly and have fun with English!

Another silly thing is that McDonald’s sells green milkshakes!

Here in the U.S., most people use St. Patty’s day as an excuse to get drunk. I remember as a youngster I wore all green to school, as did most students. My dad would usually buy me a green corsage (corsage - a flower that you pin to your shirt, much like a bridegroom does) that I’d pin to my dress. I loved wearing the corsage to school! That is certainly a special memory for me.

Small, kind things can mean a lot, right?
