Negotiations in English

One of the most important skills anyone can hold in daily life is the ability to negotiate. In general terms, a negotiation is a resolution of conflict. We enter negotiations in order to start or continue a relationship and resolve an issue. Even before we accept our first jobs, or begin our careers, we all learn how to negotiate. For one person it begins with the negotiation of an allowance with a parent. For another it involves negotiating a television schedule with a sibling. Some people are naturally stronger negotiators, and are capable of getting their needs met more easily than others. Without the ability to negotiate, people break off relationships, quit jobs, or deliberately avoid conflict and uncomfortable situations.

In the world of business, negotiating skills are used for a variety of reasons, such as to negotiate a salary or a promotion, to secure a sale, or to form a new partnership. Here are a few examples of different types of negotiations in the business world:

  • Manager and Clerk: Negotiating a promotion
  • Employer and Potential Employee: Negotiating job benefits
  • Business Partner A and B: Making decisions about investments
  • Company A and Company B: Negotiating a merger
  • Customer and Client: Making a Sale

The Art of Negotiating

Negotiating is often referred to as an "art". While some people may be naturally more skillful as negotiators, everyone can learn to negotiate. And, as they often say in business, everything is negotiable. Some techniques and skills that aid people in the negotiating process include:

  • Aiming high
  • Visualizing the end results
  • Treating one's opponent with respect and honesty
  • Preparing ahead of time
  • Exhibiting confidence

Throughout this lesson, we will review important techniques and skills to learn before negotiating. We will also examine certain tactics your opponents may use at the negotiating table. These pages are designed to prepare you for for negotiating in English in the business world, but they will also help you achieve your goals in everyday life.

I hope you like it and feel Laughing

Anja, I’m delighted to hear that your negotiation class-project went well thanks to the advice of Author Chester L. Karrass.  He’s the best in negotiations, hands down!

Dear Alston,

“In business as in life, you don’t get what you deserve, you get  what you negotiate.”  by Chester L. Karrass, turned out to be an excellent book with a content that was right on for my project. It helped me a great deal to plan and come up with ideas for a successful week. I think my students are now all geared up to use tactics as well as negotiation techniques as a great tool in every day life.

Thanks for this HOT TIP!

A prenup is a smart thing if you can find common ground. In that case I’d say, yeah go ahead and seal the deal.

...and can leave you with a sour taste ;) While doing some research on how to become a successful negotiatior, I came across this statement of a Marriage counselor :

“Most couples view negotiation as a trip to the torture chamber”

I guess for that poor woman the words became the pure truth :)

Yes, Anja, while listening to his smart negotiation, you kinda think “wow, so much can be saved” and it’s all at the cost of a poor wife. Marriage is zesty:))

Yes, Olya, quite a punchline at the end :)) He’s turned from being a caring husband to being that poor woman’s tormentor :))

I am glad you enjoyed it. I am going to present it to my students as part of the negotiation project  I am running in a few weeks.

Anja, having your students use English to negotiate is an excellent method to teach them English. As a student learning English, I would wish to be in your your class!

Alston, hi :) I never heard of “The Bible of Negotiation”  :)  So, I truly appreciate your handy hint for that link. I’ve already hit the purchase button on amazon. I was hoping to combine grammar with useful negotiation techniques during the project. I know “if-clauses” aka first/second conditional are key for a skillful negotiation.

I can see, you as a negotiator, you have that one important quality, which is tenacity. Plus using all your persuasive powers, will save you a lot of dollars ;)

“The proof is in the pudding” , as following video proves :) ;)

Negotiations is a skill that everyone had it but the different in the leve of the skill. As you said the best negotiate can achieve his goal, even if he is still a child as we can see there is a child who can get what he want form his parent. And in the other hand his borther even if he is biger than him he didnt get anything becouse his negotiate didnt satisfy his parent. So its the same way in our life. the best negotiator will success in the business world and the normal life. Even between countries. The country who has the best negotiate politic. Will become a sucessful country in business also brings peace between the othe countries. Finaly Negotiations in English is very important in the business life and the ordinary life.

Hello Anja, when I read this lesson on negotiation and your comments on it, I had to like both the lesson and your comments.

The recognized renowned authority on negotiations is Mr. Chester L. Karrass who wrote the book entitled: “In Business As In Life, You Don’t Get What You Deserve, You Get What You Negotiate”

After reading his book, I see things a lot differently, especially when it comes to negotiation.  For example, if I’m going to purchase something I implement your suggestions of knowing what you want and knowing the facts about the item.

Then I consider the position the seller is in, i.e. supply/demand, timing, motivation to sell, etc. I believe in being fair but we all have an agenda!

Finally, without negotiating, money is left on the table in favor of the seller.

Here is a link to a must read book on negotiation:

http://www.amazon.com/Business-Life-Dont-Deserve-Negotiate/dp/0965227499

I hope this helps you with your negotiation project, you may want to do a search on the author.

Alston, I’d be very interested in learning about your personal experiences in negotiating.

Do you have any tips or valuable insights you’d like to share with me /us. It would not only be interesting to learn from you as a business person but also with the background of a teacher. I am doing a whole week project on collecting basic rules or factors on how to become a successful negotiator….so your know-how would be greatly appreciated  :)

Here’s my take on what it takes to improve (y)our negotiating skills. As we spend much our lives negotiating with all kinds of people, kids, partner, boss, and the list is endless, it would be great if we could come up with a winning strategy to achieve a more or less desired outcome. We know negotiations often run into problems because people have different expectations. Wouldn’t it be great if we had a list with tips and tricks on how to not end up in a dead end situation while discussing something that’s important to us?  For me there are two main factors a) Know what you want and b) Know the facts;

When was the last time you negotiated with someone ? And what are your tips to become a more successful negotiator?
