The German magazine “bleib gesund”says that even though in polls 94% of all Germans say they know about the important /literally vital use of donor blood 96% of them admitted to not wanting to donate blood. Some said they felt too young despite being old enough according to German law, some said they were too old despite this not being true according to German law, some even said they simply “didn’t have enough time for the numb feeling after a blood-donation due to their job or their children”. Some among them even voiced worries that due to the heat in July and August this numbness could even be more intense than usual. Some honest Germans also admitted they were simply too lazy for going to a place to donate to go through this whole procedure that could last up to an entire hour. However especially now in summer blood-donation is important as all these motorbike accidents happening usually in summer are more likely to result in someone requiring donor-blood than car accidents. Also many complicated surgeries take place in summer rather than any other season. In addition to that you can’t just donate any blood to any person, but at least the Kell factor, rhesus factor and blood group of donor and donation-receiver need to be identical. Alas a synthetic product that could fit these criteria hasn’t been discovered yet. Until this day there are only transitional solutions like the saline solution – that in the long run can’t really replace blood – in case suitable donor-blood can’t be found.
