There are many different aid-organizations like ‘SOS Kinderdörfer’ or ‘Die Kinder- und Jugendhilfe Ruanda’ that support Rwanda by donating one single female goat to children and adolescents from very poor families and even to orphans. They hope that this way these children will somehow find a way to earn their living. Now ‘Dein Spiegel’ a German monthly newspaper interviewed some of these children to see what they’re doing with their life. Whether they became dairy farmers or people who sold their goat’s offspring to the butcher or people who sold their goat’s excrement as fertilizer. Even starting their own farming business and using the goat’s excrement as fertilizer themselves was an option. One story impressed them the most, so they published this girl’s whole story. She was an orphan when she received this donor-goat. The mayor of her village had three males (bucks). So she explained to him that she wanted her goat to have kits she could sell and whether or not he would mind having one of his bucks mate with the goat. The mayor was very kind and allowed her to have her goat mate with the buck whenever she pleased. However she must donate the first kit so that other poor people could have a chance, too. That was the deal! Meanwhile the goat is pregnant for the 3rd time, but healthy due to being cared for well by its owner. The second kit she delivered was sold and the girl still uses the money to go to school as for her standards books, pencils and all were just too expensive before she had the money her goat earned her. She considers keeping the goat’s next kit and become a breeder.
